about

Systemic racism is very real and is a result of our history with slavery and Jim Crowe. The Christian church has a history of working to maintain white supremacy, positioning itself opposed to civil rights and even fueling the confederacy by using the bible to defend slavery as a God ordained institution. When racism is brought up, and when the churches violent history is presented to you how do you react as a Christian? How do you react as a white American? It is necessary to reflect and know our evil past so that we can properly lament injustice and seek forgiveness as a religion and as a people. This song is written to those who refuse to delve into uncomfortable conversations that disrupt a white supremacist world view.

lyrics

We are not just guilty
Of sitting idly by.
A violent history
White washed with lies.

We facilitate
We incubate
We harbor the hate
That divides us.

Historically
It's clear how we
Perpetuated
The sins of our country.

You only have to look
past all the lies
that we tell ourselves
To get us by.

If you think I am just trying to make you feel bad.
If the truth of our history makes you turn away.
If I can't bring it up,
Without you shelling up.
You need to check your heart.
You need to open your eyes.

If it makes you squirm.

If it makes you squirm.

If it makes you squirm.
Then you are too comfortable.

The knife that we buried
So long ago
The soil has sunken now.
And it's blade is on our back.
I hope it makes you squirm.
That it makes you uncomfortable

This song is dedicated to my Pastor who I know struggles with figuring out how to have these conversations in a way that we can grow and progress towards a future of true equality.
